The Taming of the Shrew, or Film Narrative at the Crossroads of History
Abstract
The article is a review of a book by Jacek Ostaszewski Historia narracji filmowej [The History of Film Narrative] (2018) published by the Universitas publishing house. The aim of the review is to show the originality of the Polish researcher’s ideas and position them in relation to other publications devoted to the same problem. The reference point here is primarily, but not only, the ideas of film theorists: David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson, held in high esteem within the Polish film studies. Ostaszewski tries to enter into a polemic with American researchers, at the same time develops their thought and – most importantly – shows the development of narrative modes in a historical perspective.
