Abstract

Giżycki writes about „pictorial novel”, the genre bordering on film and literature, virtually unknown in Poland. He reviews Andrzej Klimowski’s novel The Depository: A Dream Book, which has recently come out in Poland (first published in London in 1994). The novel and the next one The Secret evoke poetics of a dream. Giżycki says the most important thing in pictorial novels is what’s happening between individual frame-pictures and what makes the reader-spectator use one’s own imagination. The novel has no continuous narrative line. Its heroes pass through one dream into the other. It is full of allusions to known films, early surrealist movies, film noir, and brings to mind reminiscences from Chris Marker’s La jetée and Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner.
