The Child Runs Deep in Albert: Study on Albert Lamorisse’s “The Red Balloon”
Abstract
Marek Hendrykowski’s essay offers a complex analysis of the widely renowned phenomenon - brilliant film short story named The Red Balloon (1956). It seeks to demonstrate both the exceptional value and the degree of subtlety and refined simplicity of Lamorisse’s art and his individual use of moving pictures language. Detailed attention is given to each of the main elements and functions of this unique masterpiece and its connection with many artistic, social and cultural contexts of the 1950s cinema and art. Hendrykowski’s study considers not only the literary and philosophical tradition of The Red Balloon but also its intriguing impact upon many authors of world cinema (i.e. Hou Hsiao-Hsien) and Polish cinema (Polański, Idziak, Łoziński, Maleszka and others).
