Abstract

Giżycki describes reactions of American critics on two latest European films on the United States. Lars von Trier’s Dogville was received with great concern, as reviews by American critics were very emotional and contained surprisingly polemic statements. These critics usually disliked the film and von Trier although few critics defended the movie. The reception of Brunon Dumont’s Twentynine Palms was also controversial, but more negative than positive. The press charged the film with being anti-American, but Giżycki says the most interesting were reviews by critics trying to challenge Dumont’s point of view.
