Abstract

A book review of Krzysztof Loska’s Poetics of japanese Film (Poetyka kina japońskiego). According to Helman, within the Polish context, the book is original for having a very wide scope of research, the number of aspects considered and the final synthesis. According to Loska the “japanesess” is as important as the “universal” in the final product of Japanese cinema. One must not neglect the influence of non Japanese cultural codes and the world cinema, both American and European, on Japanese films. Loska considers the relation between cinema and society, ideology and tradition. While he does not neglect the impact of western cinema and the use of Hollywood and European film themes, he also includes purely Japanese elements in his analysis. Those elements are: the organization of space, the role of benshi in Japanese silent cinema, diagonal composition, use of Japanese scenography, episode driven form of narration, use of imagery from medieval paintings and wood cuts from the Edo period.
