Abstract

Mazierska paints the picture of man in a post-Communist Poland. She notices a visible domination of men on both sides of the camera as well as in the subject matter and issues raised in most recently made Polish films. Mazierska says that this domination is not, however, a sign of the strength of the patriarchal ideology but, on the contrary, it attest to a crisis of masculinity. Mazierska reflects on a few motifs strongly present in Polish contemporary films: nostalgia for the golden days of „masculinity”, a longing for masculine hegemony (present mostly in adaptations of the classics of national literature) and misogy- nism manifesting itself in antipathy or man’s aggression toward women or in an entire lack in interest in them.
