Abstract
The article presents the specific phenomenon of the Austrian cult film 1. April 2000 (dir. Wolfgang Liebeneiner, 1952). Outlining the historical background and behind-the-scenes of its creation, the author analyses the effects of the strategy used in it and places it in the context of Austrian science-fiction and escapist films; above all, though, she highlights its connection with heimatfilm. Analysing statistical data, the author also develops a certain hypothesis regarding the relationship between the Austrians’ sense of identity and the production of heimatfilms and science-fiction films, and makes several genre-related findings about Austrian science-fiction films with regard to the definitione of science fiction she adopted. Moreover, by drawing attention to the relationship between Liebeneiner’s film and the times in which it was made, the author indicates how it resonates today and what new contexts this film opens up.
