Abstract
The presence of William Mulholland, the engineer-visionary designer of the greatest aqueduct in the world that supplies water to Los Angeles from mountains about 360 km away is apparent in three very different films: David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (2001), Roman Polański’s Chinatown (1974) and Pat O’Neill’s Water and Power (1989). The article reveals themes hidden in these films, and behind them there is the person of Mulholland, who by supplying Los Angeles with water became a co-founder of the power of the city.
