Abstract

Writing about the specificity of regional film culture is sometimes more difficult than a monographic attempt to embrace national cinematography. In the case of a region with such a complex identity as Silesia in the first half of the last century, this task is a real methodological challenge. The author must perform time-consuming research and gather material enabling a reconstructive effort; he or she should also recognize the issues resulting from a specific type of tensions: national, political, geopolitical, and finally social and family tensions. Urszula Biel managed to do all this and much more in her book Kultura prowincji górnośląskiej. Kina, właściciele, widzowie [The Culture of the Upper Silesian Province: Cinemas, Owners, Viewers] (2020). This study complements a project from two decades ago, i.e. the publication of Śląskie kina między wojnami [Silesian Cinemas Between the Wars] (2002), creating an almost complete narrative, which has no precedent in the history of regional film studies in Poland.
