Of an Adventure of a Polish Film Lover
Abstract
The following text is a review of Tadeusz Lubelski’s book Nowa Fala. O pewnej przygodzie kina francuskie go (New Wave. On an Adventure of the French Cinema). Szczepański writes that the book is a very solid, comprehensively documented and objective - because written from the historical distance of a few decades - historiographer’s recount of cinema on the artistic formation which had made a fundamental revolution in collective film awareness. On the other hand the monograph is characterized by a personal tone which causes that it is becoming a recount of a youth adventure of the Polish film lover. Lubelski sometimes gets into a polemic with the established interpretations of known films, including Trauffaut’s The 400 Blows. The most interesting excerpts are those on the origin of the movement. But Lubelski’s personal preferences cause that such important filmmakers like Godard are given insufficient coverage in the book.
