Elizabeth I – A Woman and Queen
Abstract
Stachówna analyses the way Queen Elizabeth I was portrayed in Shekhar Kapur’s film Elizabeth (1998). The picture of the Queen differs substantially from her other film portraits. The difference consist, first of all, in the fact that this time Elizabeth is not a disillusioned queen who wants to love like an ordinary woman, but rather a disillusioned ordinary woman who wants to become a real queen. The film life of Elizabeth is divided by Stachówna into two phases; the first one in which the Queen is, above all, a woman (profanum), the other one when she is only a ruler (sacrum). From that time on the queen entirely alters her image. Pale and dressed in white, she becomes a living myth, a deity made up as “Gloriana” and an eternal virgin. In this way, she satisfies the need for the myth that will save the world against chaos and a fall of historical reality.
