The Cinematic Questions of Sense of Life
Abstract
In his review of Irina Tatarova’s book Ergo sum. The Search for a Sense of Existence in the Polish and Soviet Films of 1960-1990, Szczepański argues that it is an exceptional item in contemporary film studies as it focuses on the exceptionally ambivalent and rarely analysed Polish-Russian relations. Tatarova compares the existential plots in major Polish and Soviet films by Tarkovski, Panfilov, Muratova, Wajda, Munk and Zanussi. She draws her argument on the considerations on Russia’s philosophical and religious tradition, and at the same time points to ideological distortions in the films. Emphasizing the erudite character of the argument and Tatarova’s broad horizons, Szczepański employs the term „filmosophia” to name the methodology of the book.
