From Moscow to Madrid
Abstract
The text is a review of Ewa Mazierska and Laura Rascaroli’s book, From Moscow to Madrid: Postmodern Cities, European Cinema, in which they reflect on the specific character of portraying cities in European movies. Wiącek points out that Mazierska and Rascaroli introduce a substantial innovation to contemporary critical reflection: they draw on the post-modern literature concepts to research the European film city. They stress that the subject of their research is not only a real city, but first of all, a “text-city” continuously changing, both as material being and a mental experience. A city is the space created by peculiar social relationships and communication forms. The book contains texts divided into three categories: An Old Europe (Madrid, Naples, and Marseilles), a Post-communist Europe (Warsaw, Berlin, Moscow) and Great Britain.
