Abyss, Torment, Destiny
Abstract
In the drama of Woyzeck in Georg Büchner’s novel and Werner Herzog’s film Kwiatkowska sees first of all the outline of man’s ritual quest for truth about oneself. She claims that although Woyzeck is embroiled in social reality, he exists beyond it and escapes into his inner “self’ to find the road to inner truth and redemption. He can only be redeemed after he makes a final sacrifice. Kwiatkowska follows the way in which Herzog’s story unfolds, and shows us the world and an internal struggle of the hero. Herzog’s artistic means are analyzed; his conscious theatralisation of the film, the use of music, light and painterly frames. Kwiatkowska juxtaposes the philosophical and ideological intentions of Büchner and Herzog with Antonin Artaud’s theories of the Theatre of Cruelty.
