Filmmakers, Priests, Nuns and Secretaries
Abstract
Szczepański reviews Krzysztof Kornacki’s book Polish Cinema and Catholicism (1945-1970) [Kino polskie wobec katolicyzmu] in which the author aptly constructs a historical multi-faceted panorama of complex relations between the Catholic Church and Communist authorities who regarded cinematography as one of the basic vehicles of ideological indoctrination. On the pages of the book Szczepański paints a fascinating picture of a behind-the-scenes political game of various decision-making groups, filmmakers, novelists writing for the cinema, (leftist and Catholic) intellectuals, Catholic Church officials and film critics. in his unbiased analysis of individual films and scenes, he explores the theme with extreme objectivism.
