Abstract

True Fiction Pictures and Possible Films is a record of conversations held by Kenneth Kaleta, a professor in Film studies, with Hal Hartley - one of the most original authors in American, independent cinema. The interviews, comprising the book, confront Kaletas interpretations with comments from the director himself. Kaleta is interested in the consecutive stages that the Hartleys films go through during their creation. He asks about the background, style of work, the influence of each of the tiles. Maciejewski points to the consequence with which carefully created style of each genre visible in Hartleys work is subsequently discarded, ignored or ridiculed. And so in Hartleys film, a detective story becomes a story of morality, a gloomy drama - an ironic comedy. That is how the title “true fiction” and “possible films” are born.
