Direct Cinema in the Lens of Mirosław Przylipiak
Abstract
The article is a review of the book Direct Cinema. 1960-1963 (Kino bezpośrednie. 1960-1963) (2008) by Mirosław Przylipiak. Mazierska focuses on the issues of film realism and the growing importance of documentary film making. Przylipiak presents an in-depth analysis of the rhetoric of the creators of direct cinema, who tried to convince their audiences that no one before them entered into such a close relationship with the reality. Przylipiak also analyses their films in order to see whether they fulfill the promises of their creators. He comes to the conclusion that the rhetoric of the films does not agree with the rhetoric of their creators. Przylipiak places the works of the direct cinema genre in a wider historical, political and cultural context. Over all Direct Cinema is an exceptional volume on documentary films, one deserving to be presented to a wider, international audience.
