Mizoguchi in the Circle of Melodramatic Imagination

Abstract

The author discusses the first Polish monograph on the Japanese film maker, written by Krzysztof Loska: Kenji Mizoguchi i wyobraźnia melodramatyczna (Kenji Mizoguchi and the melodramatic imagination, 2012). Loska does not seek in his biography the motives for the­matic and artistic choices of Mizoguchi. The book is rather synthetic than analytic. The author retains chronological order, but within it problematizes Mizoguchi’s work. The starting point is the issue of melodrama as a mode of expression and of melodramatic imagination, as characteristics determining Mizoguchi’s creative stance. Although the approach proposed by Loska aims for synthesis, every chapter contains some analysis of films deemed by Loska as exceptional and important. Because of the title problematic of melodramatic imagination these tend to be aspect analyses. The author focuses on selected elements, but he does not neglect anything that is important in Mizoguchi’s work.
