Abstract

Drawing on Gilles Deleuze’s concept of “crystal-image”, Spalińska-Mazur explores the notion of the cinema of Tod Browning and his cooperation with Lon Chaney, the actor who superbly plays the roles of disabled and malformed persons. She points out the deep humanity of Freaks, the film whose heroes are freaks, the disabled and people differing physically from the so-called normal ones. The roles of freaks and the disabled, the specialty of Chaney, put the issue of film acting in an entirely different light.
