Sam Peckinpah – The Bloody Moralist
Abstract
Kletowski discusses the creative work of Sam Peckinpah (died in 1984) since the time he made debut with The Deadly Companions to his last film The Osterman Weekend. He writes about a certain plot in his work, that is a farewell to the Wild West and its heroes. But this is by no means a sentimental farewell but, on the contrary, a farewell dominated by an aura of ruthlessness and violence. At the same time the films are far from being politically correct; they happen to be racist and strongly anti-feminist. They show, however, that even these extremely depraved and rejected people are able to unexpectedly find in themselves such I values as honour, loyalty, courage and sacrifice.
