Abstract

Marszałek presents Piotr Zwierzchowski’s book A Fractured Monolith [Pękniety monolit] on Socrealism in Polish movies. The multi-faceted examination of the issue is presented not only through cinematic events but also through the primary context of cinematography; not only through fictional narrative patterns but also through propagandist documentary and „documentary” films; and at last through reflections on the shape of post-war pop culture. Readers can also find accounts of the propaganda and organizational projects. The author also describes the role of film criticism of the period. The description is apt because although it discloses the misery of inventory, it takes into account the then reality: it neither spares anybody nor it stigmatizes anybody.
