Abstract

Woody Allen has painted an ironic self-portrait of an intellectual, neurotic and egocentric, copied in many films. Talarczyk says that Allen draws a self-portrait for two actors, doctor Rosenthal (Martin Landau) and documentary film maker Cliff (Allen) in Crimes and Misdemeanors. A clash of the two characters illustrates a struggle with film form. This self-thematic plot is a foundation for philosophical and moral reflections. Allen believes that comedy, irony and sarcasm are the only ways to cope with the complexity and absurdity of today’s world. Tadeusz Konwicki and Jerzy Pilch are two Polish writers representing the same kind of approach, that of an ironic outsider.
