Literary Realism vs. Film Realism
Abstract
Piotr Skrzypczak makes an analysis of three Polish great novels, The Doll by Bolesław Prus, The Promised Land by Władysław Reymont and Maria Dabrowska’s Nights and Days, in the book Filmowe panoramy społeczeństwa polskiego XIX wieku [The Film Panoramas of the Polish Society of the 20th Century]. The literary prototypes are set against the films as Skrzypczak identifies the differences and similarities of artistic techniques and multiple ways of creating the represented world in relation to the category of ”Realism”. In his analysis, the author includes critical judgments from the past but employs a modern perspective and latest adaptation theories in the analysis. His argument is clear; therefore his book may serve as an invaluable methodological textbook for teachers and students. Skrzypczak has been extremely successful in proving that you cannot substitute best adaptations for personal and intimate contact with great literature.
