Film critic and film historian; in 1973-1990 he was employed in the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where he headed i.a. the Film History Section and the Department of Film, Television and Mass Culture. He edited and co-authored the 5th and 6th volume of Historia filmu polskiego [History of Polish Film] (1985 and 1994).
