The Film Counterfeit of Witkacy
Abstract
Taras claims that films on Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz and film adaptations of his works refer to the legend of his personality and the legend of catastrophism. Films inspired by Witkacy’s life and work are analyzed here, i.e. Andrzej Kotkowski’s Country House. Kotkowski’s interpretation is that Witkacy’s catastrophism is not only his biography but first of all elements included in the artist’s literature and painting. In Andrzej Domalik’s Upstairs, Downstairs Witkacy is hidden under the character of Painter. The film’s visuals refer to the colouring of his pictures. Witkacy is hidden under the universal figure of a Man in Henryk Kluba’s The Star Wormwood. Kluba puts strong emphasis on the problem of suicide committed in response to a change of the political situation. Mariusz Treliński, the author of the film adaptation of Farewell to Autumn, lays emphases in the biography of Witkacy in a different way.
