Old Texts in New Garments
Abstract
Madej discusses an anthology compiled by Barbara Gierszewska Mniszkówna ... i co dalej. Wybór tekstów z czasopism filmowych dwudziestolecia międzywojennego (Mniszkówna.. and What Next; A Selection of Texts from Film Magazines of 1918-1939). She admits that the documents are an invaluable source of information for a historian of Polish films. Kept at various libraries these materials are almost inaccessible but as Madej notes - only there you can find an atmosphere of the struggle for the quality of Polish films and the satisfaction of new art authors with important accomplishments but also disappointment with trash in the cinema (...) and an attempted compromise between art and commerce. What attracts attention is the metaphorical, poetical and impressionist style of writing which seems a rarity today. There are also many utopian hopes on the social role of cinematograph. First of all, the texts provide us with very important information on the culture of the period.
