Abstract
The text is a review of Justyna Hanna Budzik’s book Polski film i fotografia nowego wieku na tle kultury wizualnej. Widma, antropocienie, sztandary [Polish Film and Photography of the New Century against the Background of Visual Culture: Spectres, Anthropoid Shadows, Banners] (2023), in which the researcher reflects on contemporary Polish cinema and photography in the spirit of the new humanities and visual culture studies. The publication is collage-like in nature, with the author comparing it to a video essay. Rather than attempting to synthesize the cinema of the last decade, the author aims to highlight the emerging trends in new Polish visual culture. Budzik chooses three paths, which also serve as methodologies. The experience of transformation and housing estates are explored through the lens of hauntology; the relationship between humans and nature is examined from the perspective of ecological humanities, while violent protests and changes in the public sphere are analysed using the concept of the image-as-banner.
