Cinema of Spiritual Transformation
Abstract
A review of Seweryn Kuśmierczyk’s monograph Księga filmów Andrieja Tarkowskiego (The Book of Films by Andrei Tarkovsky, 2012) that summarises the entire film work of the Russian director. Kuśmierczyk presents the creative process of the artist from the point the idea for a film is born (i.e. when a first note is made on the topic in Tarkowsky’s diary or correspondence), through the period of preparing the screenplay, work on the film set and montage. Archival materials and sources are cited and quoted in extensive footnotes. Kuśmierczyk’s work encourages the reader to enter the spiritual world of Tarkowsky’s film. The spiritual world is revealed by the analyses of films and author’s interpretations present in the book. Reading The Book of Films... makes the readers realise that Tarkowsky’s creative work and life were tightly bound together, and that we lose a lot, if we watch his films, without knowing his life.
