Abstract

The author considers the relationship between experiencing time and experiencing depression. She points out that during major depressive episodes, there may occur a shift of temporal structures, so cinematic representations should be modified to reject visual clichés and substitute them with an embodied and affective experience of time. The article features examples of phenomenological approaches to experiencing time during depression. It focuses mainly on film tropes in the depictions of depressive disorder; the author criticizes clichés, especially close-ups of a crying woman, and proposes emphasizing embodied temporal structures instead. The main case studies are The NeverEnding Story (Die unendliche Geschichte, dir. Wolfgang Petersen, 1984), Aftersun (dir. Charlotte Wells, 2022), The Night House (dir. David Bruckner, 2021), and Home (dir. Ursula Meier, 2008). The essay concludes with remarks about the connections between depression and capitalism, explored by slow cinema narrative.
