Like in a Mirror: Tadeusz Szczepański on the Films of Ingmar Bergman
Abstract
The following is a review of Tadeusz Szczepański’s book Zwierciadło Bergmana [Bergman’s Mirror] (1999) on the life and artistic activity of famous Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. The book is the fruit of extremely reliable and in-depth studies supported by Szczepański’s knowledge of Sweden’s culture and language. The question is whether the psychoanalytical method Szczepański has employed, however interesting and justified in this case, leads sometimes to the disrespect and underestimation of the issues of artistic form of Bergman’s films.
