Abstract

Kolasińska writes that relations between a woman and a man, based on love cold as a stone, are one of the most significant themes of Fassbinder’s films. The artist challenges the middle-class-accepted order, social and cultural roles attributed to sexes. He sees violence, falsity and suffering in this system. Such films as Martha and Chinese Roulette are analysed from this point of view. Fassbinder does not side with anybody in the films. Disintegration of social ties, emotional burnout, sadism and masochism are the source of omnipresent evil called loneliness.
