Abstract
The article is a review of Marta Stańczyk’s book Filmowe sensorium. Teoria zmysłów i jej krytyczny potencjał [Film Sensorium: Sensuous Theory and Its Critical Potential] (2023). The book introduces the Polish reader to the fundamentals of sensuous theory, which has been developing since the 1990s, reconstructs its philosophical background and its position in the history of film thought, explores the experience and description of film through individual senses and a multisensory perspective, and examines the possibility of a critical application of the theory. The author of the review situates the publication in a broader context of the concerns relating to the often too arbitrary use of the embodied perspective in the humanities and reads Stańczyk’s theoretical proposition through the notion of “weak theory” developed in the field of affect theory. Although the book may leave the reader not fully satisfied, the author’s insight and erudition, as well as her adoption of an openly ethical perspective, make Stańczyk’s book a valuable and original contribution to Polish film thought.
