Between Canvas and the Screen: Goya and the Spanish Cinematography
Abstract
Using Goya and his art as an example, the article presents a synthesis of various types of art inspirations present in Spanish cinematography, from the period of silent cinema to contemporary films. The inspirations can be divided into three categories. The first, is the biography of the artist and the romantic legend associated with his life. The second lies in the use of his drawings and paintings in order to reflect Spain from the period of the 18th and 19th centuries. The third category includes inspirations that go beyond the era of Goya: for example use of his work and imagery in many different, sometimes surprising ways and contexts in which they gain a completely new meaning. Through the analysis of Spanish films inspired by Goya, one can track how the understanding of his work changed in different periods of Spanish history, and how with the help of film, he became an icon of the Spanish culture, while maintaining his status of an artist with a universal appeal.
