Abstract

The article discusses Przekładaniec (Roly Poly, 1968) – a television production by Andrzej Wajda, based on the script by Stanisław Lem – in the context of bodily and sexual otherness. The author of the text describes the methods of coding otherness used by the creators, paying attention primarily to the camp style characteristic of the production. Wajda’s camp strategy, based on bodily excess and irony, made it possible to emphasize the performative and ad hoc nature of gender roles, and to denaturalize the concept of gender itself. The article also discusses the figure of the androgyne, which recurs in the movie, and which also deconstructs the idea of gender binary. The study concludes by pointing out how Roly Poly signals the entanglement of the body and gender in various social and cultural relations.
