Till the Final Note: The Story of Frederic Chopin in Andrzej Żuławski’s Film “The Blue Note”
Abstract
Kudrycka writes about Żuławski’s film The Blue Note. Żuławski had to set himself against the legend of the great artist. He selected an episode from Chopin’s biography, which had been used in Iwaszkiewicz’s drama. Chopin spends holidays in George Sand’s country house in Nohant, surrounded by fellow artists and his lover’s family. The time is crucial for Chopin’s future life. The heroes’ thoughts, conversations and lives are preoccupied with art. Żuławski made use of the letters and memoirs of the meeting participants who had constantly created reality like a work of art. The film contains numerous references to the iconography of painting, sculpture and literature, and as the story is unfolding, it is gradually losing its real character, and gathering features of fantasy or a near-Dantean vision.
