Abstract

This article is a review of Alicja Helman’s book The Charm of Twilight. Luchino Visconti’s Films. The book by Helman, who is no doubt one of Poland’s best experts on Visconti’s films and film theory, is a penetrating chronological discussion and interpretation of Visconti’s filmography. Helman makes an in-depth analysis of the screen texts and cultural, historical and political contexts of the times when the films were shot and the times they refer to. At the same time, she distances herself from the simplistic biographical methods, which Werner regards as an unquestionable asset of the book.
