“The Birds” by Tarjei Vesaas and “The Days of Matthew” by Witold Leszczyński: Issues of Film Adaptation
Abstract
Szczucka discusses basic differences between the film adaptation and the novel. She traces them in the Polish translation of the novel but also outlines differences in the interpretation of the main character and the plot. The Days of Matthew is not an accurate adaptation, which by no means diminishes value of the screen version (especially as few Polish readers are familiar with the Norwegian novel). The film avoids excessive accuracy, and the changes introduced by Leszczyński result from his conscious design. Therefore, the film may be treated as a kind of a commentary to The Birds, the visual complement of the novel.
