Death Experience in Ingmar Bergman’s “The Seventh Seal”
Abstract
The Seventh Seal may be interpreted as Bergman’s attempt to challenge death, to face it. Everybody must die. Bergman told the story of an everyday apocalypse, which both to the film director and most people is an encounter with death. Melon cites songs and colour symbolism appearing in the film in an interesting analysis. She shows that the world of film is governed by ajuxtaposition of contrasts: of the dark and bright side of man and reality, of naive faith and a rational attitude; each of the characters finds complement in its opposite.
