Silent Films According to Ingmar Bergman
Abstract
Silent films play a significant role in Bergman’s artistic activity as a basis, a source of inspiration and film partner of dialogue, growing in importance as the years go by. Bergman seems to go back to the silent film era and the post-era period most eagerly, and not to the past golden epoch but rather to the most vital film heritage to whose promotion he has in various ways contributed. Florin examines different methods used to re-valuate the heritage of silent films in Bergman’s activity, and at the same time reflects on the importance the director gives to silent movies. One of the most important silent films for Bergman is The Soul Shall Bear Witness.
