Abstract

Every society needs a myth of creation. Kolasińska says the story of Dr Frankenstein was such a myth for a century-old Cinema. That monstrous travesty of the biblical story is a myth about the man who replaces God (an act of creation) and also a woman (childbirth). Is it interesting that the foundations of this great cinematic myth (Frankenstein; or the Modern Prometheus) were laid by woman, Mary Shelley. Kolasińska discusses in detail an atmosphere (including biographical facts) in which the book was written, as well as its film versions, especially Ivan Passer’s Haunted Summer (1987) and Ken Russell’s Gothic (1986).
