Abstract

Popular music is a very important element for Wim Wenders as a film director; it does not function as „background” music, which serves to emphasize and convey mood or reinforce emotions, but an autonomous element quite often interfering with storytelling. In the age of a „crisis of image” music takes the place of the image that has failed to communicate, thus surpasses the power of visual narration because it can convey meanings and emotions much better than sterile pictures. In Wender’s films, the division and finally the interrelation between picture and sound are gradually blurred. Finally, the director clearly shifts the center of gravity of film representation from the privileged visual sphere onto sounds, thus commenting on the crisis of the cinema.
