Why Doesn’t a Judge Giggle?: A Gloss to Interpretations of “Red”
Abstract
Kopczyński reflects on the presence of metaphysical perspective in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Red. He juxtaposes the film with the script, and notes that the director removed all direct references to God and to a concrete system of faith or religion while working on the final cut. The move helped make the characters more complex, the story more clear and ambiguous, and the message less clear. What remains in the film text is a kind of sacral metaphysics and spirituality, but it is hidden between the lines, and finding it requires concentration and efforts on the part of the audience.
