Abstract

Piętas maintains that Andrei Tarkovski’s The Sacrifice is a kind of religious meditation with direct references both to events described in the Bible and their meanings. The relationship of the film with the Bible can be seen on four levels: subject, content, the presented things and elements of form. The spaces of the screen reality and a biblical world are clearly connected with each other; the same moral order and eschatological sense are visible. Piętas thoroughly analyses the relationships and references between the two. She also tries to place The Sacrifice in the context of Tarkovski’s theory of the nature and mission of creative activity.
