“In the Name of God of Mercy. To Cinema, on its Centenary”: The Self-Thematic Films of Mohsen Makhmalbaf
Abstract
Chlebda examines two films of notable Iranian film director Mohsen Makhmalbaf - Nasseredin Shah, Actor-e Cinema (Once Upon a Time, Cinema) and Salaam Cinema. Cinema is the central motif of his films. Chlebda shows how cinema portrayed in Makhmal- baf’s films may be both an instrument of manipulation and abuse of authority as well as a test of responsibility and artistic maturity of the artist. Makhmalbaf does not want to depreciate cinema but to observe and examine the force of its influence. Makhmalbaf, like Abbas Kiarostami (although their films differ in many respects), continues to expose the fictional nature of film narration and reveals the medium, blurring the line between truth and fiction, between the directed and natural realities. Makhmalbaf’s cinema is self-thematic. In his cinema the cine-camera does not try to create an illusion of the world but to destroy it.
