The Torn Man
Abstract
In this article, Drouzy, a well-known and respected biographer of Carl Theodor Dreyer, presents a portrait of the Danish director as a man; the presentation is based on the assumption that the work and the author, in this case, are one. Dreyer’s films were the product of the traumas and dramas that tor- mented the artist, while his mental and psychological structures determined the structures and mecha- nisms present in his work. Carl Theodor Dreyer was abandoned by his mother as a baby. During the first two years of his life, he was deprived of a mother, and of a stable environment that could compensate for her absence. As an adopted son in the Dreyer family, he also experienced a lot of tension and conflicts. The feeling of being unloved and the lack of emotional ties, as well as the search for the truth about his mother, created an artist with a difficult character, and marked not only his working methods, but also the subjects and the formal character of his films. Drouzy, by tracking the life and fate of Dreyer, presents a psychological portrait of the director, and looks for the causes responsible for his character.
