The Interactive Work of Grahame Weinbren as a Special Case of Film Art
Abstract
Grahame Weinbren, an American new media artist, little known in Poland, is the creator of interactive cinema. Since 1986, he directed five works (The Erl King, Frames, March, Sonata Tunnel), in which the viewer is able to interfere with the work, giving it a variety of forms. In addition Weinbren is also the author of three educational videos, which at the same time are also film interpretations of paintings by prominent artists of the past eras - Rubens, Turner and Kandinsky. Weinbren’s last work, Still Life with Banquet, is a kind of a dialogue with the 17th century Dutch and Spanish artists painting still life, that is based on comparing the paintings with modern counterparts created using film techniques, and accompanying a real life banquet. In 2005-2007, the plans appeared to create an interactive film interpretation of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz’s painting Tale - Fantasy from 1921, but due to lack of funds the project remained in the realm of fantasy.
