HISTORY

Kwartalnik Filmowy [Film Quarterly] is a quarterly academic journal published by the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Instytut Sztuki Polskiej Akademii Nauk – ISPAN). It is a continuation of the journal published in 1951-1965, edited by Department of History and Theory of Film in The Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences. At the time, the initiator and editor-in-chief of the periodical was Professor Jerzy Toeplitz – cinema historian, educator, pedagogue, author of many publications, above all the monumental six-volume History of the Art of Film

When it was first established, Kwartalnik Filmowy was the first film studies journal in Poland, and it was a discussion forum primarily for researchers associated with two research centres: Film Studies Department (Zakład Wiedzy o Filmie) of the Universisty of Łódź (there, in 1958, Boleslaw W. Lewicki created the first film studies programme in Poland and one of the first worldwide) and the Film Studies Department (Zakład Filmu) directed by Aleksander Jackiewicz at The Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The last issue of the first edition was released in 1965, and the reasons for the decision to discontinue the journal – although not entirely clear – were probably connected to a new initiative by Jerzy Toeplitz to create a monthly magazine Cinema [Kino], which partly took over the function of Kwartalnik Filmowy, opening up its columns for reflection on the theory and history of film. After an absence lasting several decades, its publishing was resumed in 1993. Because by then the monthly Cinema was devoted mostly to film criticism, the management of The Institute of Art decided to restart the scientific journal, especially since by that time numerous Polish universities opened up film studies departments. Its first editor-in-chief after the hiatus was Janusz Gazda. The resumption of the journal coincided with the 100th anniversary of the cinema.
