Mr. Proust and His Housekeeper
Abstract
The analysis of Percy Adlon’s 1981 film, inspired by memoirs of Proust’s housekeeper Céleste Albaret. Wojnicka says that Adlon’s film is first of all the story of sacrifice to literature. Taking Céleste’s account as the basis of the film plot, Adlon turns Proust into a fascinating and enigmatic person. The process of creation and book writing conceals a mystery because the concealment of the character of Proust with the character of Céleste causes that the novelist is withdrawn to the background. This is a conscious trick. Wojnicka writes that Adlon turned out to be such a subtle fan of Proust that he gave up his biography and confined himself to the legend of Proust. That legend was created by Céleste’s memoirs.
