“Á cause du soleil”
Abstract
Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon is a pretext for the author to reflect on the convergence of thought that, like a Hegelian Geist, unites the worldviews of Western Europe and the Far East, which are contradictory in many respects. The coincidence between the short stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa (Rashomon, Yabu no naka) and the famous texts of European existentialism (Les mains sales by J.-P. Sartre, L’étranger by A. Camus), expressed in almost identical formulations, questions and phrases, underlines the director’s European artistic pedigree. Using the example of one of the characters of Rashomon (Tajomaru), the essay poses a rhetorical question about the motivation of irrational human actions. The convergence of the explication of the motives for an extreme act (murder) committed by people from different cultures proves puzzling.
