Abstract

Janicki writes on the concept of time in Yasujiro Ozu’s films, in particular on issues connected with dramaturgy, the rhythm of narrative and related formal solutions. Dramaturgy is, in the case of Ozu, conditioned by a Zen worldview, from which a specific attitude to causal relationships and the narrative ‘now’ emerges. Also linked to such a worldview is the problem of ‘non-thinking’, a kind of unfocusing of perspective and contemplation of the moment itself. The text also addresses the problems of the director’s relationship to the actor and the viewer, and the experience of time by the subject, both performing and watching the film. The issues analysed are juxtaposed with worldview/aesthetic notions such as mono-no-aware and mu, as well as the problem of symbolic interpretation and the relationship to transience and death.
